Celtic Plaid Brooches

cp107

cp185

cp186

Plaid Brooches are the traditional method of fastening the plaid,
cloak or shawl
at the shoulder.
The Penannular(185)
is the most ancient style
and at one time they
became so exaggerated
 in size and design that
a law was passed in
Scotland forbidding the
pin to protrude
beyond the shoulder!
The Hunterston Brooch (107) is a reproduction
of what is arguably
the finest remaining
example in Scotland of
the tenth century Celt.
The other designs all incorporate eternal interlacings from such sources as Lindisfarne
and the
Book of Kells.
